Transportation Industry Finding Relief for Fuel Costs

Fuel costs affect every facet of life. Farm machinery, trucks, boats, trains, school buses, etc., all consume fuel in order to provide food, transportation, and products for us. We, the end consumers ultimately end up paying for rising fuel costs by higher priced foods, clothing, housing, education, transportation, etc., as well as our own fuel.

The impact on our transportation industry has far reaching consequences. The American Trucking Association already “…deeply concerned about the impact of diesel price increases on the motor carrier industry and on our national economy…”, offers tips for saving on fuel as well as naming truck stops providing the cheapest fuels, etc.

Many school districts, desperately attempting to offset fuel costs while addressing the negative impact on children’s health from toxic exhaust emissions, are being forced to strip money from classrooms, trim bus routes, and eliminate field trips. Charging fees for bus services or requiring students to walk further distances to school are being seriously considered. Some districts in Arizona concerned about health to children’s vulnerable lungs, have begun a program encouraging bus drivers to turn buses off rather than idle.

According to the National Voice for the Marine Charter Industry, fuel prices are “cutting into the ‘already slim profit margins’ of the nation’s 40,000 charter boat operators….”

Like many consumers searching for fuel budget remedies, including owners of boats, buses, trucks, trains, and automobiles, myriads of fuel additives and/or fuel conditioners have been used and tested resulting in minimal or no noticeable difference in fuel savings, much less reduced emissions. Making matters worse, many left behind damaged engines and/or fuel systems.

One company searching for relief found it when they decided to test yet another fuel conditioner in their quest for emission reduction and fuel savings. Call Sign Magazine made the official announcement that Dial-A-Cab would be testing a fuel conditioner called the UBiee PowerPill Fe-3, promising to publish results in the October 2005 issue.

Transport Industry News – How’s the Economy Affecting Business

Transport contracts, like any other work opportunities, are affected by the background state of the overall economy. So, what is currently happening in the UK and what’s the prognosis?

2013 – Another year of uncertainty

At the time of writing, all the present economic indicators appear to suggest that 2013 is likely to be, broadly speaking, another flat year in terms of economic performance. Although the economy appears to have got through the catastrophic years of 2008-2010, over the three years since there appears to have been very little positive indication of a consistent improvement in the position and the outlook for significant economic growth.

In fact, some economists were holding their breath to see if the economy would slip back into a triple-dip recession during the first quarter of the year, but fortunately that was avoided – if only just.

The position appears to be just as poor, if not slightly worse, in much of the Eurozone, with the possible exception of Germany. While that continues to be the case, the resurgence of demand for British goods in Europe would appear to be unlikely. In the Far East, things appear to be sluggish in most of the major economies and even the once apparently unstoppable Chinese performance seems to be faltering.

If there is one global glimmer of hope at the moment, it comes from the USA, where job creation, growth and stock market price increases appear once again to be moving forward into promising territories.

Transports specifics
The fuel duty escalator now appears to be a concept that is virtually dead and, over recent times, the cost of fuel has, in some areas, fallen. That is good news for people working in the area of transport contracts, and some companies may also welcome corporate taxation changes that arrived with the spring budget.

If that is perhaps good news, it may be tempered somewhat by the realisation that the transport industry exists to serve other industries and if their confidence remains low and demand for their products likewise, it will inevitably have a consequential impact on opportunities for those who take on transport contracts. Although some business confidence surveys have shown an encouraging increase in optimism amongst certain captains of industry, other surveys have shown that consumer demand remains relatively low and consumer confidence likewise. As has been commonly mentioned since 2011 and 2012, consumer consumption is at the very heart of our economic model, and if confidence doesn’t exist there, the overall economy is likely to continue to at best adrift and at worst stagnate.

Forward looking
We are now only somewhere between 2 and 2½ years away from the next general election. The government will be desperately keen to see some recognisable improvement in the economy, people’s confidence and ultimately the disposable income they have in their pockets, long before those same people need to go to the ballot box.

At the moment though, a number of respected international institutions, and indeed the government’s own statisticians, are suggesting very modest growth figures for the year or two ahead.

While it isn’t immediately clear just what more in the government could do to get the economy moving, as the election date draws ever-closer, it might be safe to anticipate another flurry of economy-stimulating activities. Just what these will be and how they might affect transport contracts specifically, we will wait to see.

Freight Transport: Industry Terms

In our commitment to being the premier source of knowledge and information regarding the freight industry, we are embarking on a new leg of the journey. We are going to start building a glossary of all the most important freight transport terms we’ve encountered on the road, on the rails, and everywhere in between. There are a lot of good resources out there; the U.S. Department of Transportation has put together a pretty inclusive list that we’ll be drawing from, along with our own resources and others around the industry.

We’re going to start this endeavor with our first term. Average Annual Daily Truck Traffic (AADTT) is a term used to describe the total volume of freight truck traffic that passes over a given portion of highway in a given year. This number is then divided by the number of days in a year. This might seem like a menial statistic, but it is an essential measure in determining the amount of maintenance that a given portion of road might need. It can also be important in determining the amount of tax dollars needed to keep everything running smoothly through this portion of highway.

A transport vehicle, whether we are talking heavy haul vehicles or ltl trucking vehicles, is decidedly more wearing on a given portion of road than conventional transport vehicles. In fact, the heavy wear delivered by the heavier loads of freight is enough to restrict transport vehicles over a certain weight from accessing some smaller roads. Roads frequented by transport vehicles (those roads with higher AADTT) require a lot of extra funding from all the extra wear and tear that comes from the thousands upon thousands of tons of freight that travel across their surfaces. By using the average annual daily truck traffic measure, the needs of a given portion of highway can be more accurately assessed and judged, keeping the roadways safe for both freight carriers and public users alike.

Because it has been a while since we talked about the history of freight transportation, it would probably be helpful to do a recap of what we’ve talked about to date. We started way back in time with the first human need for freight transport. Although we have an industry that is highly advanced and evolved, it had to start somewhere. We traced back to the very first movement of freight by humans. There is no telling when this actually occurred, but we thought it was important to try to get as close to the beginning as possible. From there, we moved forward to the all-important invention of the wheel – that invention that changed the course of human history forever and marked the birth of the freight transport vehicle.

This was the grandfather of the entire lineage of automobiles and trains making it a keystone moment for the freight transport industry, so we just had to include it in our history. Then came the wagons and the chariots. The wheel, that simple yet profound idea, found its way into carts and horse drawn buggies and continued to alter human development and slowly build freight transport from a need into a reality. Early transport was slow and inefficient, but as the wheels kept turning (cheesy pun #2) the industry kept growing and redefining itself into what we know and use today. Next time we’ll look at the latter part of the history of freight transport.

Transportation Industry Seeks Cheaper Route for Sleep Apnea Testing

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s health and safety initiative aimed to promote better lifestyles and wellness amongst drivers of the transportation industry is in full swing with a focus on obstructive sleep apnea testing and treatment taking center stage. The notion, in the eyes of transportation company executives and safety directors, of having to have their entire fleet of drivers tested and possibly treated for obstructive sleep apnea immediately brings up financial concerns as well as logistical issues stemming from drivers being off the road to get tested. However, what many of these same executives and directors are unaware of is that, with new technology and a properly managed sleep program drivers can be tested for sleep apnea and set up on treatment without having to spend a day out of their truck.

The FMCSA has approved the use of unattended in-home diagnostic sleep testing devices within the trucking industry to help alleviate some of the concerns regarding cost and time expressed throughout the industry. At a fraction of the cost of traditional in-lab studies and the ability for a driver to take the test in the comfort of their own home or in the cab on their truck while out on the road, trucking companies have embraced this new testing method with open arms. So with financial and logistic concerns eased with the use of in-home testing, the real question that faces trucking companies is where to begin with getting their drivers screened and tested. This is where having a well organized sleep program through an outside provider will help smooth out the process. There are several approaches a company may select to take on the task of testing drivers and it really boils down to the wants and needs of the company as to which will fit in best with their existing operations.

Companies that want to get ahead of the curve have adopted what can be referred to as a “proactive” program in which they are actively having their drivers screened and tested when necessary to avoid having drivers pulled from their trucks by a medical examiner who requires a sleep study to be done prior to granting a driver certification to operate their vehicle. Body Mass Index and neck size are two easily quantifiable indicators that medical examiners use to determine whether or not a driver will need to have a sleep study done and companies who have taken the proactive approach are having their drivers screened by a sleep study provider for these two attributes prior to any recertification physicals. The drivers who are at or above the current FMCSA recommendations (BMI > 35, neck size > 17 inches) are then scheduled to perform a sleep study and pending outcome of sleep study, set up on proper treatment to control their sleep apnea. On the other end of the spectrum are companies that either do not want to “hassle” their drivers to get screened and tested out of fear of drivers quitting and joining a competitor or simply do not have the resources to implement a proactive program. For these companies, a “reactive” approach to sleep apnea management is the program of choice. In a reactive program, drivers are solely referred to have a sleep study done by their examining physician in order to grant the driver a certification.

In both program scenarios, a vigilant compliance monitoring system for drivers who are set up on treatment is essential to ensure proper treatment is being received to control the sleep apnea and keep drivers safe behind the wheel. Medical examiners require drivers to provide compliance information when going for recertification or when a temporary certification has been granted to the driver to allow time to get tested and treated before a full certification will be issued. To track compliance information, CPAP machines can be fitted with a wireless modem that allows for real-time compliance updates or the use of a smartcard or memory chip can be used to record compliance information and then downloaded when needed.

There are a number of transportation services in the domain of the transportation industry. These services include airlines, bus services, taxi companies, and subways. Though these services usually aim to protect their passengers, they should also aim to protect their workers, as they are at just as much, if not more, risk of being injured.

The Important Role of GPS in the Transportation Industry

The global positioning system, or GPS, is a solar-powered satellite navigation system consisting of 24 satellites located 11,000 nautical miles in space. The United States Department of Defense placed these satellites into orbit for military operations but in the 1980s, made the system available at no charge to the public. Since the system works anywhere in the world during any time of day and in any weather conditions, there is a place for GPS in the transportation industry.

The Workings of GPS in the Transportation Industry

Twice a day, GPS satellites circle Earth, moving in a precise orbit and transmitting signals. GPS receivers capture this information and calculate the exact location of a user through triangulation. An electronic map on the receiver displays this location in either 2D or 3D depending on the number of satellites in view from the receiver. After determining the position of the user, the unit can calculate distance to destination, speed, bearing, directions, and other information.

GPS tracking systems have been important to the development of the auto transportation industry. Reputable ground transportation companies use this technology to strengthen their businesses. GPS is used to constantly track the location of transportation vehicles so supervisors know where each member of the fleet is at all times. More recently, the transportation industry has seen a few changes and trends. Despite growing global economic turmoil, the transportation remains to be a cornerstone of growth. As such, 2010 will prove to be a very telling year for the upcoming future of the industry. Some trends will prove to be threatening while others show extreme promise.

As one of the largest industries in the world, transportation includes everything from passenger planes and trains to commercial trucks, warehouses, barges and logistical services. For example, in 2009 alone, the U.S. transportation industry was estimated to have approximately $1.6 trillion in revenue. This accounted for more than 10% of the entire country’s economy. With a growing globalized economy, the transportation industry has helped promote economic growth by moving needed products nationally and worldwide.

There have been several factors threatening the global transportation industry. Between a global economic crisis and sometimes rising fuel costs, the industry has seen its fair share of decline. However, there are several reasons to believe that 2010 is looking up for the industry. For example, FedEx recently announced strong growth in Asia, resulting in a 7 percent increase in revenue for its first quarter. Additionally, international growth for the United Parcel Service has spurred recent growth.

Another positive trend for the transportation industry includes government economic stimulus dollars. Such funds are being used to bolster transportation infrastructure worldwide. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of February 2009, for example, allotted $8.4 billion in public transit projects alone, $1.1 billion for new airports and a shocking $27.5 billion for infrastructure upgrades to U.S. highways. In China, approximately $585 billion has been designated to help build and revamp railroads, airports and highways.

In 2010, we will see an increased demand for the transportation industry to consider more fuel efficient and eco-friendly operations. New technological advances help streamline operations. Doing so not only saves money, but helps reduce fuel dependency, thus positively impacting the environment. The public push for greater use of public transportation and alternative fuel options will also positively impact the overall transportation industry.
